Healthy Habits, Stay Fit & Focused at Work.

I understand, it’s a struggle at times handling a busy work and life schedule, I have been there many times before - between work, school drop off’s, kids cricket & music practice and then catching up with family and friends on the weekends – it’s easy to burn the candle at both ends. Before you know it, you’re calling in sick to work because you’re rundown from it all!

It’s time to take a step back and introduce a few daily work habits to kick the stress and get fit and focused at work:

Stay Hydrated

Such a simple yet effective tip. How many times have you gone home after work and realised that you never walked to the water filter to fill up your water bottle?

Staying hydrated by drinking 2 litres of water a day is so important, it keeps you focused, healthy and most of all maintains the function of every system in your body including your heart, brain and muscles.

Declutter your Desk

Do you know that having a cluttered desk can add stress and anxiety to your day? You might think it is organised mess but deep down it’s creating additional distractions to your already busy day.

Take the time each afternoon to tidy up your desk and pack away (or throw out) any unnecessary items so that when you walk in the next morning you are starting the day off on the right foot. No mess, less stress!

Limit Your Screen Time

Computers, mobile phones, tablets – in this day and age they are all necessary evils. We need them to operate at work and in our personal lives, but digital eye strain is slowly damaging our eyes.

Make a conscious effort each day to take a 5 - 10 minutes break after every 60 minutes of continual work on any device. Get up from your desk, walk around the office, grab a drink and stretch your legs.

Skip the Naughty Snacks

It’s easy when we are flat out to work through our lunch break and instead get sucked into eating naughty office snacks – birthday cake, chips or chocolates that are hanging round the office kitchen.

Lunch breaks are an important part of our working day, it gives us a chance to have a true break and recharge for the busy afternoon head. Making healthy food choices for lunch is just as important as it is the fuel to get you through your afternoon. Try eating healthy - Steer clear of heavy meals that will make you tired and put you in a “food coma” for the rest of your afternoon.

Create an Exercise Routine

Take a walk, join the gym, start a running club with workmates – whatever it might be, staying fit and healthy involves daily exercise.

Exercise is an important factor to living longer and decreasing our stress levels at work. It might seem hard at times to find the time but committing and creating a regular exercise routine while at work is crucial to not only our health but our success at work.

Keeping a true Work/Life Balance is an important part of staying focused at work. Employers are just as pivotal in keeping their employees on a healthy track by encouraging staff to take regular annual leave, lunch breaks and quarterly “RnR” days so they can be re-energised and not burnt out. Providing little extras benefits such as fresh fruit daily, additional annual leave, discounted gym memberships and finish up work early on a Friday are just a few simple ways we can support our staff and reduce stress, anxiety and sickness in the workplace.
